Dads and Donuts as a STEM opportunity

May 3, 2017

Make your parent involvement more meaningful. Dads and Donuts is a great opportunity for family involvement. It not only inspires team work, but it also demonstrates the kids skill levels and abilities through a playful and positive experience.

In our case, our dads were pirate captains. Their task was to engineer a ship that could float and hold the greatest amount of treasure. Using the STEM methods, our teams were given materials:

* aluminum foil

* straws

* paper triangles

* scissors

* tape

Once they built theirs ships, we challenged them to see how much treasure (pennies) their vessels could withstand.  We used plastic shoe boxes filled with water.
