We love Mat Man in our classroom! Mat Man is a super fun activity that helps little ones learn about body awareness and position. Mat Man is a component of the Handwriting Without Tears pre-k curriculum. Some of his other Hats (functions) are: socialization, taking turns, sequencing, drawing skills and counting skills.
Children love to sing along to the Mat Man song as they listen to when to add each part of his body. At the beginning of the year, we build Mat Man as part of our Getting to Know Us theme. Then throughout the year we pull him out as a refresher and the kids take turns building him. We add a little fun and dress him or her to fit our themes: a cowboy, a witch, a girl, etc... Mat Man also spends time in our stations and discovery play time. This way each child has the opportunity to build Mat Man and revisit all the great skills he provides our kiddos as well as to expand and to explore using their imaginations.
Yee Haw!!! Mat Man cowboy style!
Mat Man as an outlaw!
During our Wild West theme our little cowpokes got some small motor practice with the scissors while making vests. This was the perfect accessory for Mat Man so he got one too!
Mat Man also provides lots of discussions and time for story telling. He helps build and practice new vocabulary and make connections to real world experiences for children.
Check out a few other hats our Mat Man or Matilda has worn... (Felt outfits created and provided by Grammy, retired educator and grandma extraordinaire!)
If You give Mat Man a cookie...
Oh, camping we will go...oh, camping we will go...
